Time For Change

Today I got to meet my daughter’s new best friend. She is black. I am happy for Janie, but can’t she see that her only friend at her new school is not white? I suppose that I just wish she could have some other friends that are more like her. I wish that this didn’t bother me, but it certainly does. Today she told me that they have given themselves nicknames: Thing 1 and Thing 2. Thing 1 and Thing 2 look nearly identical, yet Janie and her black friend look nothing alike.

If she’s safe and happy, there’s not much I can do about it. Hopefully, Janie will be able to overcome all of these obstacles that I was unable to. I know that she will turn out to be such a brave woman!

“I will pick up the hook.
You will see something new.
Two things. And I call them
Thing One and Thing Two.
These Things will not bite you.
They want to have fun.”
Then, out of the box
Came Thing Two and Thing One!
And they ran to us fast.
They said. “How do you do?
Would you like to shake hands
With Thing One and Thing Two?”

The following day, Alana and Janie spent all of recess on the swings. They talked and talked and talked. Alana told jokes that made Janie giggle until her tummy was sore.

“Knock Knock” she began.

“Who’s there?” replied Janie.

“Adair!”

“Adair who?”

“Adair once but I’m bald now!”

“I love that one!” exclaimed Janie.

“Me too, it’s one of my favorites…Hey, do you like to read books?” inquired Alana.

“Yes, I love reading! Do you?” Janie responded.

“Mmhmm! What’s your favorite book?”

“Definitely Cat in the Hat! Do you like that book?”

“YES! That is one of my favorites too!”
